Meditations in Colour
October 2020
Meditations in Colour pays homage to the process of automatic, organic expression without the resistance of expectation and ego. It draws from a network of memories of moving above and through the Australian landscape, reflecting memory and a sense of mapping. These elements interact to reflect a personal connection to the land elucidated through colour and line.
Meditation is the art of sitting with an idea, to focus attention and awareness in order to achieve clarity and balance. This series is a meditative, playful study of colour and line to produce balanced works that incite consideration of the interplay between colours, and manipulation of line and shape, to create unusual sense of space and form.
Meditations in Colour delves into the relationship between colours through the complexity of layering translucent colour to find harmonious combinations that are based on memory and experience of the Australian landscape. Regularly flying between Canberra to Darwin as a child, looking down at the patchwork of pastoral and agricultural land, the natural and human made scars, and the dramatic shifts in habitat, has impacted memories of shape, line and colour in an internal landscape.
This series is holds the essence of one persons experience of the Australian landscape. From the banks of the Murray River in the south to the Daly River in the north. The crisp winter light of the high country to the heat haze of the lowlands in summer. Along the highways, through the centre, and the meandering coastal drives in and out of mountains and little towns. The red dirt, creamy sand, the dirty whites of animal bones, are highlights among the salmon pinks and silver greens of the eucalypts. Yellow wattle, wheat and canola; dusty fields of drought and lush, bright greens of the rainforests speckled with bursts of red, pink and orange. Abundant blues and greys of the sky and sea, sharing the horizon with rich warm colours of sunsets punctuated by vibrant birds. All these experiences of colour, have a place in the cache of thoughts and memories.
Meditations in Colour invites the viewer to experience a sense of discovery as they choose their own path through the labyrinth of shapes, to feel connection to familiar colour stories and to ignite the ‘frequency illusion’ in the brain, increasing the awareness of those colours in the viewer’s own experience.
